PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain satisfactory visibility and accurate reproducibility when a histogram indicating the luminance distribution of an image is displayed smaller. SOLUTION: The even-numbered number of pixel data L(2), L(4), L(6),... are thinned out of number of pixel data L(1)-L(256) at each luminance level in an image (b). The mean value of the adjacent two number of pixel data is respectively calculated while the remaining number of pixel data L(3), L(5), L(7),... are used so as to be overlapped so that frequency data D(1)-D(128) can be newly generated (c). Then, a histogram is displayed, based on the generated frequency data, so that the smooth histogram in which any difference in level between data whose luminance values are adjacent to each other is not emphasized can be obtained even when the display area is small.
