PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of the non-uniform thickness formation of a gap layer formed on a lower gap layer or a lower core layer located above a lower shield layer in a conventional thin film magnetic head. SOLUTION: The upper surfaces 1a and 1a of both side ends of a lower shield layer 1 and the upper surfaces 7a and 7a of both side ends of a lower core layer 7 are formed so as to form curved shapes, and gradually become thinner toward both edges. Thus, a lower gap layer 2 and a gap layer 8 are formed while substantially maintaining uniform thickness.
