PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper money counting machine which can efficiently count paper moneys even if a paper money other than a paper money to be counted is detected or plural paper moneys are fed together at the same time. SOLUTION: The paper money counting machine is equipped with a paper money hopper 1, a payoff roller 4, a conveyor belt, a sensor device 9 which generates detection data on the paper money, a CPU which decides the conveyance states and denominations of paper moneys and counts acceptable paper moneys, a RAM which can store the count value of the paper moneys, and a paper money stack part 10 for the counted paper moneys. The paper money hopper is so constituted that paper moneys more than paper moneys which can be stack at the paper money stack part can be set, and the CPU stores the paper money count value in a paper money count value storage area of the RAM while regarding the maximum number of paper moneys at the paper money stack part as one counting cycle, stops driving the payoff roller and conveyor belt and stores the count value of one counting cycle as a temporary count value in a temporary count value storage part of the RAM each time the counting cycle ends, and then restarts a next counting cycle for paper moneys set in the paper money hopper.
