Homopolymers and copolymers are produced by anionic chain polymerization of esters or nitriles of alpha-beta-mono-unsaturated carboxylic acids and dienes using a tertiary alcoholate of an alkali metal as a polymerization catalyst. The polymerization is effected in bulk or in inert organic solvents and produces polymers with an isotactic structure. In the examples, acrylonitrile, butyl acrylate, isoprene, and methyl methacrylate are homopolymerized. Catalysts exemplified are: lithium t-hexanolate alone or with butyl lithium; lithium t-butoxide alone or with n-butyl lithium or sec.-butyl lithium; potassium t-butoxide; and the reaction product of n-butyl lithium and methyl pivalate. The polymers may be used for making films. |
