PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alkaline battery that comprises a nickel hydroxide active material in which nickel hydroxide and electrolyte can contact directly even if it has a higher order cobalt oxide on its surface and that has high capacity and excellent large current discharge characteristics. SOLUTION: The alkaline battery is equipped with a positive electrode active material composed mainly of nickel hydroxide coated with a higher order cobalt compound containing alkaline cation on a part of the surface. When a part of the surface of the nickel hydroxide is coated with a cobalt compound, the contact of nickel hydroxide and electrolyte is not obstructed and contacted directly and large current discharge characteristics is improved. As a part of the surface of the nickel hydroxide is coated with a higher order cobalt compound, a good conductive network is formed within the positive electrode by the good conductivity of the higher order cobalt compound and utilization rate of the active material is improved, which allows obtaining an alkaline battery having large capacity and excellent large current discharge characteristics. |
