PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data transfer circuit capable of transferring decoded managing data, which are read out of a disk, to a specified memory area for updating the contents thereof with more simplified configuration and operation, a recording and reproducing unit provide with such a circuit and a data transfer method. SOLUTION: At the time of reproducing the managing data from a recording medium, the managing data read out of the recording medium are demodulated and temporarily stored on a decoding area 12a of an SDRAM 12. The stored managing data are read out for each of processing such as ECC, EDC and SCR and after such processing is applied, these data are directly transferred to a system area 12a of the SDRAM 12 without being written back to the decoding area 12a. Thus, correcting (updating) processing of contents is applied to the managing data held in the system area 12b by an MPU 112.
