Synergistic antimicrobial skin washing compositions containing triclosan, chlorohexidine gluconate and/or an alcohol

A method for providing a synergistic antimicrobial activity to skin or hair comprises successive steps of applying to the skin or hair a first washing composition comprising at least 0.1% by weight of Triclosan or Triclocarban and applying to the skin or hair a second washing composition comprising, at least 0.3% by weight of Triclosan or Triclocarban, chlorhexidine gluconate or an alcohol. The weight percent of Triclosan or Triclocarban in the second washing composition is distinct from that of the at least 0.1 weight percent Triclosan or Triclocarban in the first washing composition. Also described are synergistic skin treatment compositions comprising in two separate, successively applied washing compositions, a first washing composition comprising at least 0.1% by weight of Triclosan or Triclocarban and a second washing composition comprising either at least 0.3% by weight of Triclosan or Triclocarban, chlorhexidine gluconate or an alcohol. The successive application of the first and second washing composition results in a synergistic antimicrobial activity wherein a there is a decrease in minimum inhibitory or minimum bactericidal concentration against at least 2 of S.aureus ATCC 6538, E.coli ATCC 11229 or methicillin resistant S.aureus HL 121.
