PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoide the failure of unintentionally recording images whose image quality is a failure in an image pickup device for detecting the pixel defect of an image pickup element and compensating a defective pixel. SOLUTION: This image pickup device is provided with a defective pixel detection part 19 for detecting the pixel defect of a CCD image pickup element 5 and a pixel defect compensation part 20 for compensating the defective pixel. The defective pixel detection part is constituted of a test image pickup part 19-1 for executing the charge storage and read operation of the image pickup element in the sate of interrupting exposure, a defect decision part 19-2 for comparing the image pickup element output level with a prescribed pixel defect decision level and deciding the defective pixel, a defective pixel number limitation part 19-3 for changing the decision level and limiting the number of the decided defective pixels to a prescribed value or less, an image quality failure state detection part 19-4 for deciding that it is in image quality failure state in the case that the number of the detected defective pixels exceeds the prescribed value when the decision level reaches an allowable limit level and an image quality failure coping processing part 19-5 for shortening exposure time at the time of detecting the image quality failure state. |
