A chip card for carrying out transactions in which value data representing units of monetary value or other, non-monetary entitlements, is transferred between the card holder and at least one transaction partner (service provider) or is presented to the service provider for verification of such entitlements includes a memory in which the data required for carrying out the transactions is stored. A facility for loading the card with one or more card applications (VAS applications), which in each case permit transactions to be carried out between the cardholder and one or more service providers, is provided on the card. A transfer memory portion that is not proprietary to a service provider is provided for accommodating data which is interchanged or presented between different service providers in the performance of a transaction and which represents the monetary units or non-monetary entitlements.
