The present invention relates to a novel mammalian gene which encodes a oocyte specific histone. The human form of the gene is identified as H1oo provided (SEQ ID NO: 1). H1oo- (SEQ ID NO: 3) and H1oo- (SEQ ID NO: 5) have been identified in the mouse. Nucleic acids that code for a mammalian H1oo protein are also provided. Such mammalian H1oo proteins are the human H1oo protein (SEQ ID NO: 2) and the mouse proteins H1oo- (SEQ ID NO: 3) and H1oo- (SEQ ID NO: 5). The present invention also provides recombinant vectors comprising nucleic acid molecules that code for the H1oo gene products. In certain embodiments, these recombinant vectors are plasmids. In certain embodiments, these recombinant vectors are prokaryotic or eukaryotic expression vectors. The present invention further provides host cells comprising a nucleic acid that codes for the H1oo gene products.
