Paramagnetic-resonant charge-transfer complexes of aromatic hydrocarbons with organic Lewis acids are prepared in the form of single crystals by reacting the components in a suitable solvent and leaving to crystallize. The Lewis acids mentioned are ethylenes, cyclobutenediones, quinones and quinodimethanes carrying two or more cyano, halogen, nitro or nitroso substituents, and polynitro- and polynitrososubstituted aromatic hydrocarbons; these may carry further electronegative substituents. The aromatic hydrocarbon may be polynuclear and/or substituted by alkyl or vinylalkyl. Chrysene, coronene, hexamethylbenzene and 2-ethylphenanthrene are specified.ALSO:Paramagnetic-resonant charge-transfer compounds are prepared in the form of single crystals by reacting an organic Lewis acid with an organic or inorganic Lewis base in a suitable solvent and leaving to crystallise. The Lewis acids mentioned are ethylenes, cyclobutene-diones, quinones and quinodimethanes carrying two or more cyano, halogen, nitro or nitroso substituents, and polynitro- and polynitroso-substituted aromatic hydrocarbons; these may carry further electronegative substituents. The Lewis base (which can be used in the form of a salt) may be ammonia, an aliphatic amine, a quaternary ammonium compounds, an aromatic diamine, a phosphorus, arsenic or antimony analogue of these, an aromatic hydrocarbon, a metal carbonyl or a metal chelate of an organic compound. These may carry further electropositive substituents. Many suitable Lewis acids and bases are mentioned, and examples are given of the preparation of the following complexes:-7:7:8:8-tetracyano-diquinomethane with triethylamine, triethylmethylammonium iodide, t-butyl-dimethylamine, methyltriphenylphosphonium iodide, ethyltriphenyl-phosphonium iodide, tetraphosphonium iodide, methyltriphenylarsonium iodide, ethyltriphenylarsonium iodide, trimethylphenylammonium iodide, tetraphenylstibonium iodide and 1:2-bis-(methylthio)- 1:2-bis- (morpholine)-ethylene; chloranil with diamino-durene; and tetracyano-ethylene with 1:5-diamino-naphthalene. A complex of tetracyanoethylene with ferrocene is mentioned as not falling within the scope of the invention.
