<p>A network communications system (20) for communicating data securely via an unsecured path (38, 84) between an agent (22, 82) and a console (24, 72). The agent (82) may be located inside a secured network segment (76) and the console (72) may be located inside a network segment (74) elsewhere in a LAN (70). Alternately, the agent (22) may be located inside a secured LAN (28) and the console (24) located inside a LAN (34), with the path (38) being via a wide area network such as the Internet (26). The data may be communicated variously using: e-mail; FTP; tunneling protocols, like HTTP or VPN; or a proprietary protocol. Conventionally assigned ports may be statically or dynamically used, or the network communications system (20) may programmatically find an open port.</p> |
