<p>A belt shortening device (10) for winding and unwinding a vehicle seat belt (26) is disclosed. The device (10) includes an L-shaped spindle (14) mounted in a frame (12) and connected to a crank arm (16) to facilitate winding. The spindle (14) includes a longitudinally extending slot (24) which communicates with a laterally extending entry opening (22). A seat belt (26) is insertable, edge first, into the longitudinally extending slot (24) via the laterally extending entry opening (22). Once the vehicle seat belt (26) is positioned within the longitudinally extending slot (24), the closure closes (18) the entry opening (22) and the crank arm (16) is manipulated to, thereby, rotate the spindle (14) to wind the belt (26) therearound. The laterally extending entry opening (22) is positioned at one end of the length of the longitudinally extending slot (24). A guide tab or pair of guide tabs (30) may also be employed to further secure the belt (26) during winding and unwinding.</p> |
