The method breaks esp. a connecting rod (1) with bearing eye (2), to two bearing shells forming the eye. The connecting rod is placed with its eye over a two-part mandrel (10), the mandrel parts (11,12) are moved apart to pre-tension the eye in direction of separation, the eye is fixed in position on one side of the separation plane relative to the associated mandrel part (11), via adjustable stops (29). A wedge is driven into the gap between the mandrel parts, and the fixed bearing shell with its mandrel part is separated from the other shell by simultaneous bearing of both sides.
