A major amount of a C4 to C7 isoolefine is copolymerized with a minor amount of a C4 to C14 di- or multiolefine using a catalyst system comprising an anhydrous hydrogen halide and a dialkyl aluminium monohalide AlR2X, where R is a branched or straight chain C1 to C12 alkyl and X is fluorine, chlorine or bromine, at a temperature between 0 and - 100 DEG C., the mole ratio of anhydrous hydrogen halide to dialkyl aluminium monohalide being no greater than 0.05:1. The preferred polymer is obtained by reacting 95 to 99.5% by weight of isobutene with 0.5 to 5% by weight of isoprene. Cyclodiolefinic compounds such as cyclopentadiene, methylcyclopentadiene and compounds such as b -pinene or divinylbenzene may be incorporated with the isoolefine either in addition to or in place of the diolefine. The polymerization may be carried out in bulk or in solution. In the examples isoprene is copolymerized with isobutene and methylcyclopentadiene is copolymerized with isobutene.
|
