[Also in Division B1] A homogeneous powdered product is prepared from an intimate mixture of a powdered material and a molten material having the form of a viscous liquid, by injecting the mixture into a flow of cooling air, causing the mixture to solidify as a substantially dry powder. A concentrated artificial milk for calves is prepared from powdered skim milk and molten fat, by mixing the powdered material and viscous liquid in a mixer 1, introducing the material discharged from the mixer into a flow of cooling air which transports the discharged material through a conduit 3, after which the material follows a free path in falling into the collectors 12. The mixed material is discharged into the separating chamber 5 as a fountain of small particles, typically 100-500 microns in size, which, after attaining their highest level, freely fall in a rain-like manner. The separator has a top wall 6 and side walls 7 of nylon filter cloth which may periodically be shaken by a cable 15 to free adhering material; the separating chamber should be of sufficient height to avoid any contact of the fountain of material with the top wall 6 except, possibly, at low velocities, whereby agglomeration of the material is prevented. The cooling air is continuously recirculated through a cooler 10 providing an air temperature of 2‹C. |
