The assembly to lay layers of yarns in a multi-axial alignment, at a warp knitter (1), has a continuous transport chain on both longitudinal sides of the laid yarns. The deflection rollers (21,22;31,32) coaxial to each other, to guide each upper level of the transport chains (2,3), are interlinked by drives (A1,A2). At least one drive link (A1,A2) is fitted with a clamp coupling (44) to lock the coaxial deflection rollers (21,22;31,32) together, when the upper or lower level of one chain (2) is tensed against the opposite level of the other chain (3). The chain deflection rollers (22,32) at the entry side of the yarn laying assembly are fixed at the machine frame, interconnected by a drive (A2) with shaft sections (42,43) and a clamp coupling (44) with a linkage shaft (45). A tensioning roller is at the lower level of each chain (2,3), which can be moved and locked in the set position. The entry chain deflection rollers (22,32) can be shifted parallel to the upper levels of the chains (2,3), independently of each other. The clamp coupling (44) is a pawl unit, together with an elastic coupling. The transport chains (2,3), on both longitudinal sides of the yarn laying zone, are fitted with hooks to hold the yarns under tension at the upper levels of the chains. A diagonal yarn layer is between the chains, on a plane which differs from the chain movement plane. The chain deflection rollers (21,31) for both chains (2,3) at the laid yarn layer are powered by a common servo motor (4). The entry chain deflection rollers (22,32) rotate independently of each other. The deflection roller (22) for the chain (2) which tenses the first diagonal yarn layer against the direction of travel, at the entry into the laying zone, is powered by a separate servo motor, synchronized with the first servo motor (4) through an electronic control unit.
