The method for the guiding regulation is carried out and using an engine control unit (30) and a control unit (32), a NOx signal of the NOx sensitive measuring unit and the lambda values of the two lambda probes are determined. Depending on the lambda value at the front lambda probe (18) a composition of an air-fuel mixture to be ignited is influenced whilst desired regulating values are specified for suitable adjusting medium (lambda regulation). The desired regulating values are monitored depending on the lambda value at the rear lambda probe (20) and the NOx signal of the NOx measuring unit and in certain cases are regulated (guide regulation).
