The method involves measuring the input voltage (UE) generated from the mains voltage (UN) and controlling the voltage adapter depending on the input voltage. The mains voltage type is first determined from the input voltage and then the adapter is controlled according to the amplitude and/or type of the input voltage. A controller samples a linear voltage derived from the input voltage at a frequency greater than four times the mains frequency. Independent claims are also included for the following: an arrangement for monitoring the input voltage of an electronic voltage adapter for operating a fluorescent lamp.
