Pneumatic liquid crystal (LC) medium contains dielectrically negative compounds comprising: 4'-(trans-4-substituted cyclohexyl)-2,3-difluoro-biphenyl and 4-(4-(trans-4-substituted cyclohexyl)-cyclohexyl)-, -cyclohex-1-enyl) or -2-fluoro-cyclohex-1-enyl)-2,3-difluorobenzene compound(s), 2 and 3-ring compound(s) (II) and optionally bis(2,3-difluorophenyl) and bis(fluoropyridyl) compound(s) (III). pneumatic liquid crystal (LC) medium contains dielectrically negative compounds comprising (a) 4'-(trans-4-substituted cyclohexyl)-2,3-difluoro-biphenyl and 4-(4-(trans-4-substituted cyclohexyl)-cyclohexyl)-, -cyclohex-1-enyl) or -2-fluoro-cyclohex-1-enyl)-2,3-difluorobenzene compound(s), (b) 2 and 3-ring compound(s) (II) and optionally (c) bis(2,3-difluorophenyl) and bis(fluoropyridyl) compound(s) (III) of the formulae: A<1> = 1,4-phenylene, trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-cyclohex-1-enylene or 2-fluoro-1,4-cyclohex-1-enylene ring; R<11> = 1-7 carbon (C) alkoxy or 2-7C alkenyloxy; or R<11> = 1-7C alkyl if A<1> = (fluoro)cyclohexenyl; R<12>, R<21>, R<22>, R<31>, R<32> = 1=7C alkyl, 1-7C alkoxy or 2-7C alkenyloxy; Z<21>, Z<22>, Z<31> = -CH2-CH2-, -CH=CH-, -CC-, -COO- or a single bond; A<21>, A<22> = trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene, 2-fluoro- and 2,3-difluoro-1,4-phenylene, pyrimidin-2,5-diyl and pyridin-2,5-diyl rings; L<21> and L<22>, L<31> and L<32>, L<33> and L<34> in pairs = C-F or one is N and the other C-F; l = 0 or 1.
