PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a two-dimensional solid-state image pickup element suitable for photographing a thin and long visual field at a high speed and capable of being manufactured at a low cost. SOLUTION: This two-dimensional image pickup element is provided with a pixel group arrayed in matrix corresponding to the visual field of a standard image pickup device a vertical shift register for transferring the output of respective pixels constituting the pixel group in the vertical direction for respective columns and a horizontal shift register for transferring electric charges transferred from the vertical shift register of the respective columns in the horizontal direction and outputting them to the outside. The transfer operation of the vertical shift register and the horizontal shift register are controllable from the outside. The pixel group arrayed in matrix is divided into a first pixel group belonging to the specified horizontal line band of the number of lines sufficiently less than the total number of horizontal lines and a second pixel group not belonging to the specified horizontal line band. Also, all or a large part of the pixels constituting the first pixel group are turned to photosensitive pixels and all or a large part of the pixels constituting the second pixel group are turned to optical black pixels.
