PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium showing excellent running durability and excellent electromagnetic transducing characteristics by accurately evaluating the quantity of a lubricant on the surface of a magnetic layer. SOLUTION: If area values of absorption spectra of 2,940-2,800 cm-1 when measuring the surface of the magnetic layer by a total reflection absorption measuring method using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy before and after the surface of the magnetic layer is washed with an organic solvent to remove the lubricant are defined as A and B, respectively, the value (A-B) is 0.01 or more and 0.30 or less.
