Method uses a relatively movable visible or IR light source, with a homogenous light output, for illuminating a paper or foil sample strip (3), which is manually passed through a measuring slit (2), a photodetector with a planar window for measuring the light transparency and a silicon photodetector row. Upper surface of the sample strip is clamped in direct contact with a diffusion body of the light source, with its underside in direct contact with the photodetector during passage through the measuring slit. An Independent claim for a transparency, opacity and cloudiness measuring device is also included.
