A method of increasing blood flow to the patient's body includes periodically raising the chest either mechanically or electrically by stimulation of appropriate tissue and periodically blocking inflow of air, for example, by a respiration device (54) applied to the patient's respiration tract preventing airflow therethrough and thereby causing an increased negative intrathoracic pressure to accomplish the increased blood flow.
