A method for the periodic removal of swarf in turning, milling and similar operations comprises producing brief powerful electric current pulses which result in a pressure wave acting directly on the swarf to remove it as it leaves the workpiece. The pressure wave may be produced by striking an arc across a spark gap 4 or by vaporizing a wire. To direct the pressure wave a reflector may be incorporated which is formed by a recess 10 in a carrier 9, the electrodes 11 and 12 constituting the spark gap. One of the electrodes may be formed by the swarf itself. In the case of wire vaporization the wire is automatically fed into the reflector after each discharge. Another embodiment incorporates the use of a coil which when subjected to a current produces an electromagnetic force which in turn produces a repulsion force in the swarf and so removes it. Electrical circuits for creating current pulses are described.</p> |
