A process for the production of essentially unsaturated oligomers of 4-6C alkenes from an alkene or alkene containing hydrocarbon stream at a nickel containing heterogeneous catalyst in an adiabatic reactor at 20-300 [deg]C and 1-100 bar comprises working up a first partial outlet stream to the oligomer and recycling a second partial stream together with fresh alkene to the reactor.
