The procedure for reducing the formation of oil caking in machines in which at least one undesirable zone of increased temperature may arise entails actively swirling the oil in the high temperature zone by means of mechanical elements guided at least partially through it. The high temperature zone may be in the oil washed region of a rotating mechanical seal(14,16) and in this case the movement of the mechanical seal may be used directly or indirectly for swirling. An independent claim is included for a device for reducing the formation of oil caking in machines and which has means to swirl the oil in the high temperature zones. -
