Preparing bacterial cellulose from Acetobacter xylinum, useful for making medical or cosmetic pads, comprises culturing in buffered medium with easy purification under mild conditions

Preparing specific shaped objects or layers of bacterial cellulose (BC) using Acetobacter xylinum DSM 13368, with or without pretreatment with cellulase, is new. The cells are cultured in buffered medium of pH 4-7.2 containing inorganic salts, at least one assimilable source of carbon at 15-30 g/l and at least one assimilable source of nitrogen at 4-6 g/l, at 15-38 deg C. A homogeneous layer of BC, 60 mm thick, is formed. This is separated, washed at least once, and cut into layers, or formed into shape. These products are washed again and treated with a chemical stabilizer and/or an active agent.
