The apparatus has a base field magnet system (GFMS) for generating a base magnetic field (GMF) and a coil system (SS) with an arrangement of coils (SA). The characteristic of a conductor (L) of the coil arrangement when carrying current to produce a predetermined target magnetic field is determined using a method that allows linear boundary conditions. One of the linear boundary conditions takes account of a vibration of the coil system due to Lorenz forces acting on the conductor in the base magnetic field to generate acoustic noise, and the characteristic of the conductor is defined so that the vibration is reduced.
