The heated surface 53 (Fig. 5) of a film evaporator, which may be used for evaporating a solution of a synthetic resin to recover the solvent, is scraped to prevent build up of residue by means of blades 55 pivotally mounted on a rotor 52 which is rotated at such a speed that the blades bear against the evaporator surface with a force of at least 90 grams-weight for each centimetre of length of the blades. Each blade 55 has a pair of bushes 56 welded one at each end of the radially inner side of the blade, each bush having disposed within it a portion of a pivot pin 57 which has its other portion received in another bush 58 carried by a ring 54 mounted on the rotor 52. The solution is fed to the upper part of the evaporator and runs down over the surface, a residue collector device being mounted beneath the blades 55. The collector device (Fig. 3) comprises a heated housing 36 which is in gas tight sealing relation with the evaporator casing 53 and which is co-operable with a vertically movable platform 38 which has mounted on it a movable container 43. A movable ladle 45 extends through a stuffing box 47 for the removal of a sample of residue.</p> |
