SPOOLER FOR SPIRAL COIL BINDING ELEMENT

Embodiments of a spooling machine for paper- or notebook-binding spiral coil, and the resulting spools, are described. The spooling machine receives spiral coil continuously or semi-continuously from a source such as a forming machine that causes the coil to rotate on its longitudinal axis as it is delivered. In a first station, the invented spooling machine provides a cover preferably partially around the circumference of the coil and along preferably the entire length of the coil, without stopping the axial or rotational movement of the coil. In a second station, the direction of the rotating, axially-moving coil is turned, so that the coil moves forward and radially outward from the longitudinal axis of the first station to a spooling or "reeling" position and then turns to travel directly toward the spool in a radial plane normal to the longitudinal axis of the machine and the spool. The invention machine places the spiral coil on a spool preferably without twisting or stretching the coil, and results in many wraps of coil on the spool with barrier material between the wraps to allow fast and effective un-spooling of the coil.
