In apparatus for making structural honeycomb material in which a web 19, Fig. 1, of bibulous material is formed with transverse slits 29, is coated on opposite sides with staggered lines of adhesive by rollers 33, 35, and is stacked on a support below the rollers by folding zig-zag fashion about the slit lines, the means for forming the slits 29 comprises a roller 1 having an inset tool 15 which is projected from and drawn within the roller. As shown, the tool 15 (Fig. 3), comprises a blade having serrations 17 which produce slits connected by narrow webs of unslit material. The blade is housed in a slot 3 in the roller 1 and is projected outwardly at the position shown by a pneumatic ram 7 at each end of the roller, the rams being actuated by compressed air supplied through the roller spindle 5 and through a valve 9 opened by cam means 11, 13. In a modification two rams 7 arranged symmetrically and connected to the blade by a common bridgepiece are provided. The web 19 is held against the roller 1 by pneumatically-pressed rubberfaced rollers 21, 23, the former being positively driven. Pressure means comprising a series of discs on a common axle may also be provided adjacent the point of actuation of the blade 15.</p> |
