PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical material having sufficient transparency and moisture resistance and further having sufficient suppression of whitening (clouding) and to provide a method for manufacturing it. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the optical material is provided with a step to mix a phosphoric acid ester compound expressed by the formula (10) and cupric oxide together and a step to add water thereto. The optical material comprises a copper compound of the phosphoric acid ester obtained by those reactions.
