A plugboard assembly, Fig. 1, includes a rear bay 12 with contact springs 16, Fig. 3, and a front bay 30 that pivots about pins 46, Fig. 4 (not shown), journalled in the rear bay and receives plug pins 34, Fig. 3, interconnected by patchcords 32. When handles 22 on the rear bay are rotated upwardly, the front bay closes in towards the rear bay and cam members 14, 15, Fig. 3, are rotated to drive the front bay upwards so that the pins 34 engage and deflect the springs 16. Pins 50, 52 on the front bay engage in latch members 20 on the rear bay. The front bay 30 includes an aluminium frame comprising top and bottom pieces 80, 82, a centre piece 84 and side pieces 86, 88, and a lower stainless steel stressplate 61, said frame accommodating four panels 72, 74, 76, 78 moulded of phenolic resin or dialkyl phthalate. The cross-section of each frame piece (see Fig. 10) includes an internal recess 94 peripherally surrounding the panel pairs 72, 78 and 74, 76, said recess 94 presenting a first bearing surface 92 parallel to the panel face and a second bearing surface 87 transverse of the first surface and spaced from the panel edge. The space between the surfaces and the panel edge is filled with a thermosetting plastics material such as epoxy resin, 96, as shown, to bond the panels to the frame. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 11 (not shown), the frame 162 is composed of two identical halves 164, 166 fastened together by screws and/or thermosetting plastics material to captivate the panels between the frame halves. In assembly, the frame is located in a jig, Fig. 7 (not shown), having locating means for registering with panel apertures, a bead of the thermosetting plastics material 96 is deposited in the recess 94 around the frame, the panels 72-78 are positioned in the frame under control of the locating means to engage the bonding material 96 which then flows to fill the recess 94, and the bonding material is allowed to set. In further modifications of Fig. 10, shown in Figs. 12-14, Fig. 15, Fig. 16, Fig. 17, Fig. 18, Fig. 19 (not shown), the internal peripheral recess presents several surfaces spaced from the panel edge, the spaces therebetween being filled with the thermosetting bonding material. In the modification of Figs. 20, 21 (not shown), first bonding material is deposited in part of the recess, the panels are positioned and the material allowed to set, then further bonding material is deposited in the remainder of the recess. Pins may also be inserted to secure the panels to the frame.
