Bar code reader device and method for its use in a media autochanger

An autochanger (100) includes an imaging device (250) affixed to a media handling device (162). The autochanger (100) is of the type that uses optical indicia (196) to identify media pieces (170) located therein. The imaging device (250) is movable between a first position and a second position relative to the media handling device (162). The autochanger (100) moves the imaging device (250) to positions relative to the media pieces (170) where the imaging device (250) can read the indicia (196). The autochanger (100) further moves the imaging device (250) relative to the media handling device (162) to optimize the reading capability of the imaging device (250) without increasing the size of the autochanger (100).
