PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the detection accuracy by eliminating the influence of the current which flows on rails. SOLUTION: This wheel detector 10 is provided a receiver coil 14 placed on the lateral part of a conductive rail 20, detects the change of neighboring magnetic field by the receiver coil 14 and based on the detected result detects, whether there is a wheel on the rail in the neighborhood of the receiving coil 14. A noise detection coil 18 is placed at a distance from the position of the receiver coil 14 on the lateral part of the rail 20. When only the change of the magnetic filed is detected by the receiver coil 14 which corresponding to that detected by the noise detection coil 18, it is determined that no wheel exists on the rail 20 in the neighborhood of the receiver coil 14.
