<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact and thin rear projection optical system in the up-and-down direction of the picture plane of a screen surface though it has excellent optical performance. SOLUTION: In this rear projection optical system projecting a picture on a panel display surface (I1) onto the screen surface (I2), an image formation optical system (PT) is constituted of plural lenses, and a 1st mirror (M1) is a plane mirror, a 2nd mirror (M2) is a curved surface mirror and a 3rd mirror (M3) is a plane mirror opposed nearly in parallel with the surface (I2). When a light beam passing through the center of a diaphragm from the center of the picture plane of the surface (I1) and reaching the center of the picture plane of the surface (I2) is set as a picture plane center light beam, the optical system is optically arranged so that the picture plane center light beam made incident on the mirror (M1) is not parallel with a plane formed by the picture plane center light beam made incident on the surface (I2) with the normal of the surface (I2).</p> |
