摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact and thin rear projection optical system though it has excellent optical performance. SOLUTION: This rear projection optical system projecting a picture on a panel display surface (I1) onto a screen surface (I2) is equipped with a positive- power image formation optical system (PT) including plural lenses and a negative-power curved surface mirror (M2) as a member having optical power. When a light beam passing through the center of a diaphragm from the center of the picture plane of the surface (I1) and reaching the center of the picture plane of the surface (I2) is set as a picture plane center light beam, the optical system satisfies conditional expressions: 1.0<(d2×cosθ)/d1<3.0 and 20<θ<65 d1: the optical path length of the picture plane center light beam from the optical system (PT) to the mirror (M2), d2: the optical path length of the picture plane center light beam from the mirror (M2) to the surface (I2), andθ: the incident angle( deg.) of the picture plane center light beam to the surface (I2)}.
