Process for purifying oxygen-containing exhaust gas from lean burn IC engines comprises adjusting the gas during stoichiometric or rich operation by adding oxygen; subjecting to electrical gas discharge and contacting with a catalytic material. A plasma module (3) for the electrical gas discharge is connected to catalyst (4) in such a way that unstable excited gas molecules flow with the exhaust gas into the catalyst. An Independent claim is also included for a device for purifying oxygen-containing exhaust gas. Preferred Features: The electrical gas discharge is carried out before the catalytic material so that the unstable excited gas molecules come into contact with the catalytic material. Chemical radicals of the oxygen-containing exhaust gas are used as the unstable excited gas molecules. The gas discharge is carried out up to ten seconds before and no later than the start of the IC engine.
