PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize a casing of an actuator for an air cylinder and the like. SOLUTION: This position detector is installed on the casing of the actuator, to detect the positions of a piston rod and a piston as reciprocating members mounted reciprocatingly. A magnet 14 is installed on the piston, a sensor part 24 with a GMR sensor element 31 sensitive to the magnetic force of the magnet 14 is installed on the flat detector installed on the casing. The flat detector is installed on the flat surface of the casing to detect the position of the piston rod.
