PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method by which growth not only of bacteria, fungi, algae and protozoans in an aqueous system but also of iron bacteria can be suppressed and slime problems caused in the aqueous system can efficiently be solved. SOLUTION: This method for suppressing microorganisms in the aqueous system is characterized in that 4,5-dichloro-1,2-dithiol-3-one and one or more of compounds generating hypochlorous acid or hypobromous acid in water are simultaneously made to act.
