PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a 2-oxo-imidazolidine-4-carboxylic acid hydroxisamde derivative, a medicinal composition containing the same derivative and a use of the above derivative in the treatment of arthritis, inflammation, cancer and the other diseases. SOLUTION: This 2-oxo-imidazolidine-4-carboxylic acid hydroxisamde compound is a compound of the formula, wherein, R1 to R4 are each designated in the specification, its pharmaceutically permissible salts and solvated materials, and useful as a matrix metalloproteinase inhibitor. The pharmaceutical composition containing such compound and a method for treating diseases characterized by an inappropriate matrix metalloproteinase activity such as osteo arthritis, chronic rheumatoide arthritis, cancer, osteoporosis, tissue tumorigenesis, restenosis, periodontal disease, inflammation, bolus dermatosis, pleurisy, cerebral stroke, Alzheimer disease, etc., are provided. The method for synthesizing the compound expressed by the formula (1) is also provided.
