PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automate measuring work for main dimensions of a wheel set. SOLUTION: This instrument is provided with positioning mechanisms 41, 42, 43 for horizontally holding the wheel set 1 for railroad at a given position, upper tread sensors 17a, 17b which move horizontally above the positioned wheel set 1 while one-dimensionally scanning the treads of wheels 1a, 1b to detect the profile of each tread from a continuous change of the amount of displacement thereof and to detect the amount of axial movement thereof, and lower tread sensors 131, 132, 133 lying under the positioned wheel set 1 to detect diameter measuring positions P of the wheels 1a, and to detect the amount of displacement at the diameter measuring positions P. Main dimensions of the wheel set 1, which are the distance between inner surfaces of the wheels 1a, 1b, diameter measuring positions, distance between flange outer surfaces, flange heights, and wheel diameters, are respectively calculated by using detection data of the upper and lower tread sensors.
