PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent erroneous learning of the holding currents in a valve timing control region near the most delayed angle or its vicinity and the most advance angle or its vicinity. SOLUTION: This valve timing control device checks (S401) if the current target valve timing VTTGT is within a region between a set value A and a set value B. If VTTGT<A or VTTGT>B, learning of a holding current is prohibited and if A<=VTTTGT<=B, the holding current is learned when the learning condition is fulfilled (S401-). As a result, deviation of the actual valve timing against the target valve timing, deterioration of convergence, etc., caused by erroneous learning of the holding current within a valve timing control region near the most delayed angle or its vicinity and the most advance angle or its vicinity are prevented from occurring, to prevent deterioration of controllability in the valve timing control.
