PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing polyphenylene sulfide(PPS) fibers, by which a PPS fibers maintaining good heat resistance and chemical resistance, having the characteristics of high strength and high toughness, scarcely having fuzzes, and giving base fabrics having excellent qualities can be produced with high production efficiency and in a high yield. SOLUTION: This method for producing PPS fibers by a direct spinning and drawing method is characterized by melting PPS having a melt flow rate of 100 to 600 at a polymer temperature of 295 to 320 deg.C, spinning the melted PPS through nozzle holes each having a hole diameter D of 0.1 to 0.6 mm, a hole length L/hole diameter D ratio of >=2.5, controlling the temperature of the atmosphere at a place of 10 cm below a spinneret surface through which the spun fibers pass, imparting an aqueous oil to the cooled spun fibers, taking off the undrawn fibers, immediately transferring the fibers to a drawing process, subjecting the fibers to the primary drawing treatment in a specific ratio, to the secondary drawing treatment in a specific ratio, and further to the subsequent tertiary drawing treatment at a specific ratio, and then winding up the drawn fibers.
