PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the accuracy of determining a possibility of vehicle rollover according to the roll angle and roll angular velocity of the vehicle. SOLUTION: A threshold line S is set on a two-dimensional map whose parameters are the roll angle θ and roll angular velocity co of the vehicle, and one determines a possibility of vehicle rollover when a hysteresis line of the actual roll angle θ and roll angular velocity ω of the vehicle crosses the threshold line S from a non-rollover area on the side of an original point to a rollover area on the side opposite to the original point. When the lateral slip speed of the vehicle detected by a noncontact optical sensor is high, the 'trip-over' type rollover is likely to occur upon collision of the tires against curbstones or the like; the threshold line S is then moved to approach the original point as the lateral slip speed of the vehicle increases, and a determination of a possibility of vehicle rollover is made at early stages to thereby enable an air curtain to be precisely spread. |
