PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an internal combustion engine capable of suitably switching stratified combustion to homogeneous combustion even in any internal combustion engine performing EGR in homogeneous combustion. SOLUTION: In the internal combustion engine 10, the EGR quantity re- circulated to an intake passage 11 is adjusted through the opening control of an EGR valve 17. When a switching from stratified combustion to homogeneous combustion is requested, an electronic control unit 18 controls the opening of the EGR valve 17 to zero, and then switches the control quantities of an injection system and an ignition system to values requested in homogeneous combustion to perform the lag correction of the ignition timing. When the leg quantity for the lag correction of the ignition timing is damped to zero, the opening of the EGR valve 17 is increased to the value requested in homogeneous combustion.
