The feedback method involves permitting exhaust gas feedback only during defined engine operating phases and feeding back the gas from only one of a row of cylinders (C1-C5) during such phases either fully or partly with a set feedback rate to a charging air manifold (2). Outside these phases the feedback is interrupted and the gas is fed to the turbocharger (6) via the exhaust gas manifold (4).
