Catalytic composition and catalytic process of dimerisation, codimerisation and oligomerisation of olefins

The combination of an organometallic compound of nickel containing a heterocyclic carbene or dicarbene in a two component salt melt medium is found to give a system with good thermal and chemical stability, particularly to oxidation. The catalytic composition results form the dissolution of a Ni compound containing a mono- or di-carbene heterocyclic compound in a medium comprising: a quaternary ammonium and phosphonium halide(product A); an aluminum halide(product B); and optionally, an organic Al compound(product C). An Independent claim is also included for the process of dimerization, codimerization and oligomerization of an olefin using the complex composition.
