This invention relates to an organic electroluminescent element composed of a pair of electrodes (2) and (5) at least one of which is transparent and layers of organic compounds consisting of a hole injection layer (3), a luminescent/electron injection layer (4), and the like interposed between the electrodes, with at least one of the aforementioned layers of organic compounds comprising a compound represented by the following general formula (1) <CHEM> (wherein R1 to R12 designate substituents such as alkyl group or hydrogen). An organic electroluminescent element of this invention exhibits excellent luminous characteristics, reliability, and durability and are useful as luminescent element in a variety of displays.
